Zinc is an easily absorbed mineral that is important for the functioning of the whole body. It is needed to maintain the integrity of the skin, hair growth, body growth, cell regeneration and protection against free radicals. Zinc is also required for the synthesis and function of the thyroid gland and sex hormones.
Prolonged zinc deficiency may increase susceptibility to infections, poor wound healing, loss of appetite, decreased sensitivity to taste and smell, visual disturbances and increased incidence of viruses.
Because zinc is not produced or stored naturally by the body, it is considered an important nutrient and must be obtained from food or supplements.
